Sultan Suleyman II

Ruled 1687-1691

Suleyman II was born in 1642 at Topkapi Palace in Istanbul. His father was Sultan Ibrahim and his mother was Saliha Dilasub Sultan.

Suleyman ascended to the throne in 1687 after his brother Mehmed IV was dethroned, becoming the 20th Ottoman sultan. At the beginning of his reign he had to deal with economic difficulties and social unrest. The empire continued to lose territory to Austria, especially in the Balkans, which negatively affected the treasury's revenues. The sultan, who went on a Hungarian campaign in 1691, died in Edirne due to a serious illness. His body was brought to Istanbul and buried in the tomb of Suleyman the Magnificent.

After his death, Ahmed II ascended to the throne.
