Malakli Dog

Aksaray Malaklisi

The Malakli Karabas, often simply called as Malakli, is a large, powerful livestock guardian dog (LGD) breed native to Turkey, specifically the Aksaray province. It is not the same as the Kangal or Akbash, although they are all related Turkish livestock guardian breeds. Their primary purpose is to protect livestock from predators (wolves, bears, jackals). They work independently, often patrolling the perimeter of the flock and confronting threats. Unlike breeds like Border Collies, Malaklis are guardians, not herders. They don't move the flock; they protect it.

Malakli is one of the largest Turkish dog breeds. Males are typically 74-86 cm (29-34 inches) tall at the shoulder and can weigh 50-82+ kg (110-180+ pounds). Females are slightly smaller. They are muscular, robust, and built for strength and endurance. They have a deep chest and a substantial bone structure. A key distinguishing feature is the loose skin around the head and neck, forming prominent wrinkles and dewlaps. They have a large, broad head. The muzzle is relatively short and blunt. Their coat is short to medium length, dense double coat that provides protection from harsh weather. The color is most commonly fawn or brindle, often with a black mask. White markings are possible, but a solid, dark mask is a defining characteristic. They have dropped ears that are usually cropped short in Turkey, a traditional practice for fights against wolves. The tail is usually docked, long and carried low, with a possible slight curl. Their lifespan is typically 10-13 years.

Malakli dogs are not typically aggressive without reason, but they are very wary of strangers and will defend what they perceive as theirs. They are generally calm and quiet indoors when their needs are met. They are independent thinkers and require consistent training and socialization from a very young age.

The Malakli is not a suitable breed for first-time dog owners or those unfamiliar with large, independent livestock guardian dogs. They need a firm, consistent, and confident owner who can establish themselves as the pack leader. They are not a typical "pet" breed but rather a working dog with a strong protective instinct. They are not suited to apartment living or small yards. They are best suited to a rural environment with plenty of space and a job to do (guarding livestock).

The Malakli is not recognized by major organizations like the AKC (American Kennel Club) or the FCI (Fédération Cynologique Internationale). It is primarily recognized within Turkey.
